We invite you to read an article by Marcin Drozd, Project Manager at Enika Sp. z o.o. The article presents a modernization system for diesel locomotives. Despite the generally ongoing electrification of railways, there are still many lines where only diesel locomotives can operate. Furthermore, these locomotives remain the most popular shunting locomotives. Most diesel locomotives in Poland have long since passed their prime, and, moreover, do not meet the new, stringent emission standards. The response to market needs is the modernization of worn-out locomotives, primarily consisting of replacing the old engine with a new diesel engine that meets the latest emission standards. This change necessitates the replacement of further components – primarily the main and auxiliary generators, which together with the diesel engine form the generator set. Smaller components of the locomotive's equipment are also replaced, starting with the main locomotive controller, through rectifiers and inverters powering auxiliary equipment, and ending with new cab panels. Of course, modernization also involves refreshing the appearance of the locomotive, new painting, and sometimes modification of the superstructure.
