Wrocław’s Protram 204WrAs trams fitted with passenger air conditioning

As part of its fleet modernization program, MPK Wrocław has equipped all of its Protram 204WrAs trams with air conditioning for the passenger compartment.

To improve passenger comfort, the operator selected air-conditioning units marketed under the iGORRA brand and manufactured by ENIKA, a Łódź-based company and a major European manufacturer of electrical equipment for urban public transport vehicles.

 

The Protram 204WrAs trams were manufactured between 2004 and 2008 by the now-defunct Wrocław-based company Protram. Despite their conceptual similarity to the legendary Konstal 105Na tramcars, they represented an entirely new design which, after more than six decades, revived the tradition of tram manufacturing in the capital of Lower Silesia. Commercially, however, the model was not asuccess: MPK Wrocław was its only customer and ultimately purchased just 12 of the originally planned 20 cars. This allowed six two-car sets to be formed. The trams remain in revenue service today and represent a particularly interesting chapter in the history of Polish tram development and Wrocław’s urban transport system.

As part of its scheduled maintenance cycles, MPK Wrocław decided to carry out a partial modernization of the trams, aimed at refurbishing their interiors and improvin gpassenger comfort during the summer months.

 

Last year, MPK ordered four air-conditioning units for the first two-car set, comprising cars no. 2604+2605, which returned to revenue service in September 2025. This year, following the successful completion of testing, a further 20 air-conditioning units were ordered for the remaining ten cars.

 

Due to the vehicle design, the limited load-bearing capacity of the roof and the absence of roof-mounted air ducts, compact iGORRA air-conditioning units were selected. These units were specifically developed for the modernization of older tram types.

 

Each air-conditioning unit is supplied from the vehicle’s 24 V DC onboard electrical system and provides a cooling capacity of 6 kW.

 

On Wrocław’s Protram 204WrAs trams, two units are installed on the roof of each car: one in the area above the second doorway and the other towards the rear of the car. One of the units incorporates its own auxiliary converter supplied directly from the 600 V DC traction power supply, while the other houses components of the control system. The two units are interconnected electrically and via a communications link.

“The system operates fully automatically. The air conditioning switches on automatically once the specified operating parameters are reached and requires no intervention from the driver. This ensures that comfortable conditions inside the vehicle are maintained automatically whenever the system is in operation. We would like to thank ENIKA for its cooperation on this project and for supplying a solution that has enabled us to successfully retrofit air conditioning to trams that form an important part of Wrocław’s public transport history. Modernization projects like this allow us to improve passenger comfort not only in new vehicles, but also in those that have been carrying the residents of our city for many years,” said Witold Woźny, President of MPK Wrocław.
